 Understanding the Qur'an

سورۃ نمبر 2 البقرة

Verse No. 199

عَعُوذُ بِاللّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ

In The Name of Allah, The Most Beneficent, The Most Merciful

Translation:

Then return from wherever they return, and ask forgiveness of Allah. 220 Surely, He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

Interpretation:

سورة الْبَقَرَة 220

From the time of Abraham and Ishmael (PBUH) the well-known method of Hajj in Arabia was to go to Arafat from Mina on the 7th of Dhul-Hijjah and return at night and stay in Muzdalifah. But in later times, when the Brahmanism of the Quraysh was gradually established, they said, "We are the people of the sanctuary. It is inferior to our status to go to Arafat with the common people of Arabia." So he made the distinction for himself that he would return to Muzdalifah and leave the common people to go to Arafat. Then the same distinction was granted to the Bani Khuza'ah and the Bani Kananah and to the other tribes with whom the Quraysh had marital relations. Eventually the turn came to the point that the tribes who were allies of the Quraysh had a higher status than the common Arabs and they too stopped going to Arafat. This idol of pride has been broken in this verse. The verse is addressed specifically to the Quraysh and their relatives and allied tribes and the general address is to all those who would like to make such distinctions for themselves in the future. They are being commanded to go with them wherever they go, to stay with them, to return with them, and to violate the Sunnah of Abraham because of the pride of ignorance. If so, ask forgiveness from Allah for this.
